My research is primarily focused on understanding the relationship between local neuronal function and the resulting large scale brain activity and behavior. One of my main interests is multisensory integration, because it allows observation of the combination of multiple — initially different — activity patterns on all levels of the brain: from sensory regions, to association cortex, to motor action and learning. The techniques I employ to study these phenomena are mainly optical, such as optical imaging (IOI/VSD), 2-photon microscopy and optogenetics. These methods are further complemented by multichannel electrophysiology and fMRI/SPECT.
