There was a time when everything was dark. All the spirits where asleep. Only the great father of all spirits was awake. He gently awoke the sun mother. As she opened her eyes, warm rays of light spread out to the sleeping earth. The father told the sun: "Mother, I have work for you. Go down to the earth and awake the sleeping spirits!" - Aboriginal creation myth

About Our Research

We use optical methods to study the brain. Our particular focus is on using optical methods to stimulate and measure neural activity at the mesoscopic scale---we study how groups of neurons communicate with each other on the population level, and form complex dynamics which give rise to learning, memory and disease.

Biologically, we study (1) rodents while they learn behavioral tasks and (2) rodent models of Parkinson disease and epilepsy.

If you would like to join our team or just get to know our lab, please email Michael or Kenta! It is best to apply/start talking as early as possible, so that things can be arranged.
