My scientific background is in optical imaging (especially voltage sensitive dye imaging). As a physician, I have also conducted clinical EEG studies. My scientific interest centers around the emergent population activity patterns of the brain: single-cell firing patterns cannot fully explain the functions and pathologies of our brains, just as studying Brownian motion will not explain or predict climate patterns. Our current projects are on distributed memory engrams in the cortex, and on pathological dynamics in Parkinson disease and epilepsy.
