Several learning theories predict interactions between sensory cortical areas and the basal ganglia. These interactions became even more interesting since it is know that e.g. neurons in auditory cortex code not only physical properties of sounds but also task relations, modifications by attention and behavioural meaning of sounds.
My research interest is to decode these interactions and to shed light on their contribution to learning and decision making. For this purpose we use a shuttle box Go/NoGo discriminative avoidance learning paradigm and measure electrophysiological signals (LFP, action potentials) from multi electrode arrays chronically implanted in the auditory cortex and the basal ganglia.
