We focus on particular mechanisms of synaptic plasticity and learning & memory. Our central paradigm is long-term potentiation (LTP), the most established cellular model of learning and memory. In recent time, we became also interested in the role of the physiological counter-player of LTP - long-term depression (LTD) and of depotentiation, the re-depression of LTP shortly after its induction. These types of synaptic plasticity are investigated in the hippocampus, a region which is thought to be involved in spatial and associative types of learning and which has certain advantages for such studies for anatomical reasons. As a congenial complement of the neurophysiological work, we are conducting behavioral studies validating the findings of the LTP/LTD experiments regarding their relevance to hippocampus-dependent learning and memory (collaboration with Special lab 'Behavioral Pharmacology', W. Wetzel, LINK ). The animals used for this type of research are rats und a growing number of mutant mouse lines.
