Forschungsinteressen
Wir interessieren uns dafür, wie die Extrazellulärmatrix des Gehirns zur enormen Leistungsfähigkeit und Plastizität dieses Organs beiträgt.
Die Matrix, die immerhin ca. 20-25% des Gewebes ausmacht, wird von Neuronen und Gliazellen gebildet und besteht aus großen Kohlehydrat-Polymeren wie Hyaluronsäure, Proteoglycanen wie Brevican oder Neurocan, und einer Vielzahl von Glycoproteinen. Sie ändert ihre Struktur und Zusammensetzung während der Hirnentwicklung von Mensch und Tier, aber auch bei Hirnschädigungen, neurologischen oder psychiatrischen Erkrankungen und während des natürlichen Alterungsprozesses.
Wir wollen verstehen, wie die Aktivität von Nervenzellen, z.B. beim Lernen oder Erinnern, und die Integrität der Extrazellulärmatrix miteinander wechselwirken. Wir untersuchen daher einerseits, wie sich künstlich herbeigeführte Matrix-Veränderungen, z.B. durch enzymatischen Abbau der Matrix oder in Proteoglycan-Knockout-Mäusen auf Aktivitätseigenschaften der Nervenzellen und kognitive Fähigkeiten der Tiere auswirken, und andererseits suchen wir nach natürlichen Matrix-Veränderungen im ZNS, die durch neuronale Aktivität induziert oder beeinflusst werden können.
Besonders interessiert uns die Rolle von Neuromodulatoren wie Dopamin beim Matrix-Umbau sowie der Zusammenhang von Matrix-Veränderungen und natürlichem Altern oder Epilepsie.
Bei menschlichen Probanden suchen wir nach kleinen Veränderungen in Matrix-kodierenden Genen, sogenannten Einzelnukleotid-Polymorphismen, und deren Assoziation mit kognitiven Fähigkeiten und Flexibilität.

Lebenslauf
Constanze Seidenbecher hat von 1983 bis 1988 Biochemie an der Martin-Luther-Universität Halle studiert und 1996 an der Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg promoviert. 2005 hat sie sich habilitiert und die Venia legendi für Biochemie an der Medizinischen Fakultät der Otto-von-Guericke-Universität erhalten, wo sie 2015 zur außerplanmäßigen Professorin ernannt wurde. Sie hält Vorlesungen über Neurobiochemie für Studierende der Medizin und unterrichtet im Studiengang Integrative Neuroscience.
Constanze Seidenbecher ist Arbeitsgruppenleiterin der Gruppe "Perisynaptische Extrazellulärmatrix" innerhalb der Abteilung Neurochemie/Molekularbiologie am LIN und leitet seit 2008 gemeinsam mit Björn Schott das "Imaging Genetics"-Labor.
Seit 2004 leitet sie auch die Wissenschaftsorganisation und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit am LIN.
Im Center for Behavioral Brain Sciences (CBBS) Magdeburg engagiert sie sich seit dessen Gründung 2007 für den Neurowissenschaftsstandort Magdeburg und gehört seit 2017 dem CBBS-Direktorium an. Sie ist Mitglied im Vorstand des SFB779 "Neurobiologie motivierten Verhaltens" und des Graduiertenkollegs SynAGE und stellvertretende Sprecherin der Graduiertenschule ABINEP.
Für die International Society for Neurochemistry hat sie als Vorsitzende des School-Ausschusses von 2009 bis 20017 internationale Sommerschulen für Doktoranden und Postdocs in Griechenland, Mexico, Australien und Frankreich organisiert.
Sie ist seit 2015 Handling Editor für Journal of Neurochemistry und Review Editor für Frontiers in Molecular Neuroscience.
Außerdem engagiert sie sich als Mentorin für Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen und Nachwuchswissenschaftler.
