Abteilung Verhaltensneurologie

Die Abteilung Verhaltensneurologie untersucht Physiologie und Pathophysiologie menschlichen Verhaltens. Wir konzentrieren uns dabei auf drei kognitive Fähigkeiten, welche als Ressourcen für Lernen und Gedächtnis wirken. Diese umfassen die Fähigkeit zu gerichteter Aufmerksamkeit, die Möglichkeit expliziter als auch impliziter sensomotorischer Kontrolle, und die Organisation von Gedächtnis in großangelegten Netzwerken des Gehirns. Unser Ziel ist es, anhand zugrundeliegender physiologischer und psychologischer Prinzipien Lernstrategien zu definieren, sowie die Pathophysiologie, Klassifikation und Rehabilitation neurologischer und psychiatrischer Erkrankungen besser zu verstehen.

Unsere Forschung verknüpft nicht-invasive als auch invasive Elektrophysiologie beim Menschen, 3T- und 7T-Magnetresonanztomographie, Genetik, Psychophysik und maschinelles Lernen. Wir untersuchen sowohl Gesunde als auch Patienten mit neurologischen und psychiatrischen Erkrankungen. Die Abteilung eröffnet als Schnittstelle zur Universitätsklinik der Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg Möglichkeiten für Grundlagenforschung mit klinischen Implikationen, unter anderem durch einen Fokus auf klinische Kohorten.

    Hans-Jochen Heinze hat Humanmedizin und Mathematik studiert. Nach seiner Ausbildung zum Facharzt für Neurologie und seiner Habilitation 1985 ging er als DFG-Stipendiat für zwei Jahre an das Cognitive Neuroscience Department der University of California, San Diego. Anschließend war er Oberarzt der Neurologischen Klinik der Medizinischen Hochschule Hannover. 1993 übernahm er die Leitung der Klinik für Neurologie II der Medizinischen Fakultät an der Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg.

    Seit 1997 ist er ferner Direktor des Imaging-Zentrums in Magdeburg, seit 2002 auch Koordinator des Center for Advanced Imaging (CAI) Magdeburg-Bremen. Des Weiteren ist er seit 2005 Direktor der Abteilung Verhaltensneurologie des LIN. Seit 2008 leitet Heinze die Universitätsklinik für Neurologie, die aus der Klinik für Neurologie und der Klinik für Neurologie II hervorgegangen ist. Anfang 2019 wurde er Ärztlicher Direktor des Universitätsklinikums Magdeburg.

    Zu seinen Forschungsgebieten gehört die funktionelle Bildgebung von kognitiven Funktionen im Bereich der visuellen Aufmerksamkeit, der Belohnungsverarbeitung, der Verhaltensneurologie sowie Gedächtnis und Bewusstsein. Er arbeitet überdies an der Integration der neu entwickelten Imaging-Verfahren in der Neurologie.

    2005 bis 2011 war Hans-Jochen Heinze Mitglied des Senats und des Hauptausschusses der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). Zum 1. Februar 2009 ist Hans-Jochen Heinze von dem damaligen Bundespräsidenten Horst Köhler in den Wissenschaftsrat berufen worden. Im Februar 2012 wurde Prof. Heinze für eine erneute dreijährige Amtszeit in den Wissenschaftsrat berufen.

    Projekte

    Die Fähigkeit, Aufmerksamkeit auf aktuell relevante Informationen zu lenken, etwa indem Regelmäßigkeiten in der Umwelt erkannt werden, ist eine Grundlage von Lernen. Ein Ziel der Abteilung ist daher ein besseres Verständnis der Neurophysiologie von Aufmerksamkeit und Erwartung. Hierzu verknüpft unsere Forschung experimentelle Paradigmen, welche räumliche und nicht-räumliche Aufmerksamkeit sowie statistische Lernvorgänge operationalisieren, mit Magnet- und Elektroenzephalographie, Magnetresonanztomographie  sowie Elektrokortikographie. Ein weiteres Ziel ist es, auf Basis einzelner experimenteller Beobachtungen (engl. single-trial) ereigniskorrelierte Potentiale zu dekodieren,  sowohl um Lernen in  Abhängigkeit des aktuellen kognitiven Zustands besser zu verstehen, als auch mit Blick auf die Steuerung von Gehirn-Maschine-Schnittstellen.

     

    Menschliches Verhalten erfordert häufig wenig bewusste Steuerung. Trotzdem bleibt unser Verhalten erstaunlich flexibel, dank impliziter Lernmechanismen, etwa im Rahmen motorischer Adaptation. Implizite Kontrolle setzt kognitive Ressourcen frei, die sonst zur expliziten Steuerung und kognitiven Kontrolle gebunden sind. Unser Ziel ist es, das Zusammenspiel von expliziten und impliziten Mechanismen sensomotorischer Kontrolle zu verstehen, um daraus Implikationen für Lernstrategien als auch für neurologische und psychiatrische Erkrankungen abzuleiten. Wir interessieren uns insbesondere für das Zusammenwirken kognitiver Strategien und impliziter motorischer Lernvorgänge bei Gesunden, für die Rolle von subjektivem Erleben, Metakognition und Aufmerksamkeit für motorisches und perzeptuelles Lernen, sowie für das Zusammenspiel motorischer und kognitiver Funktionen im Rahmen zerebellärer Ataxien, der amyotrophen Lateralsklerose und der Zwangsstörung.

     

    Der Hippocampus und benachbarte Regionen des medialen Schläfenlappens sind wichtige neuroanatomische Strukturen für menschliches Gedächtnis, welche jedoch besonders anfällig für Alterungsprozesse und pathologische Vorgänge in neurologischen und psychiatrischen Erkrankungen sind. Der Hippocampus ist in ein kortikales und subkortikales Netzwerk eingebunden, welches kortikale Regionen der Mittellinie umfasst, etwa den anterioren cingulären Kortex, den medialen Präfrontalkortex, Prekuneus und subkortikale Strukturen wie das ventrale Striatum, Teil des mesolimbischen dopaminergen Belohnungssystems.   

    Wir interessieren uns für eine mögliche Rolle dieser Netzwerke als neurokognitive Ressourcen, welche Beeinträchtigungen hippokampaler Funktion im Alter und in neuropsychiatrischen Erkrankungen kompensieren kann. Unsere Forschung umfasst die Identifizierung neokortikaler Gedächtnisnetzwerke, die Charakterisierung beteiligter Neurotransmittersysteme, insbesondere des dopaminergen Belohnungssystems, Genetik und Pharmakologie, als auch die Untersuchung sowohl von Patienten als auch gesunden Trägern genetischer Risikovarianten synaptischer Proteine.
