OVGU-Gastgruppe Visuelle Aufmerksamkeit

Unsere Arbeitsgruppe beschäftigt sich mit der raum-zeitlichen Dynamik kortikaler Prozesse, die der Aufmerksamkeits- und Belohnungsselektion zugrunde liegen. Überdies untersuchen wir Aufmerksamkeitsprozesse, die für die Speicherung von Informationen über Orte, Objekte und Merkmale im Arbeitsgedächtnis wesentlich sind. Unsere Forschung orientiert sich hierbei an einem Modell-basierten Ansatz (Selective Tuning Model of Visual Attention, STM), der ein realistisches Modell der räumlich-zeitlichen Kodierung von Information im visuellen Kortex auf der Komplexitätsebene bietet. Eine zentrale Annahme des Modells besteht darin, dass die Auswahl von Merkmalen durch Aufmerksamkeit auf einer gegenläufigen Verarbeitung in der kortikalen Hierarchie beruht.

Das Modell macht dabei überprüfbare Annahmen über die kortikalen Selektionsprozesse, die die Hierarchie umkehren. Entsprechend konnten wir mittels raum-zeitlich hochauflösender Hirnaktivitätsmessungen (Magnetenzephalographie, MEG) wichtige Vorhersagen des STMModells hinsichtlich räumlicher Informationsauswahl bestätigen.

    Max Hopf studierte von 1986 bis 1992 Humanmedizin in Jena. Promovierte dort 1992 zum Dr. med., habilitierte sich 2005 an der Otto-von-Guericke Universität Magdeburg, wo er 2007 zum Professor für Kognitive Neurophysiologie an der Medizinischen Fakultät der OVGU berufen wurde.

    Er absolvierte 1995-1997 als DAAD-Stipendiat einen Forschungsaufenthalt am Center for Neuroscience der UC Davis (Kalifornien). Dies legte den Grundstein für seine weitere Forschungstätigkeit, welche sich auf die Untersuchung von kortikalen Prozessen der Orientierung von visueller Aufmerksamkeit im Menschen fokussiert. Hervorzuheben sind dabei Kollaborationen, die seine Forschungskarriere entscheidend beeinflusst haben. Diese umfassen insbesondere gemeinsame Arbeiten zu neuronalen Mechanismen der visuellen Suche mit Steven J. Luck (damals University of Iowa, heute am Center for Neuroscience, UC Davis) sowie experimentelle Arbeiten zur Überprüfung eines computationalen Modells attentionaler Selektion im visuellen Cortex mit John K. Tsostos (York University Toronto).
